Isabel Gonzalez Whitaker, Senior Editor, InStyle
In the face of adversity, how do you decide to keep going?
While adversity in life, in work, or in a project, may be difficult, I try to always reframe any obstacle to be a “challenge” instead. When you look at adversity as a challenge it becomes something that innately possesses hope and has potential for positivity. And challenges can be fun and can ignite a tremendous sense of creativity.
What was your childhood ambition?
It was to be a marine biologist! I spent a lot of time in Miami and always loved being around the ocean.
Tell us about a person that you admire
Ralph de la Vega, CEO of AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets, is an inspiration for the immense challenges he faced growing up and the success he has achieved—as well as how much time and energy he gives back to many communities. Likewise, my mother, Sara Gonzalez, who also overcame tremendous obstacles on her path to success and for all the lives she positively touched as an advocate for Hispanic rights.
For meetings: breakfast, lunch, or dinner?
Breakfast or lunch. Dinners I try to reserve for family.
What sacrifices on your personal life did you have to make in order to become a business success?
Early on, I gave up a lot of time spent with my family and even moved away from them in order to try to forge a path in this competitive industry. In a way though, I think when you are young (and you don’t need a lot of sleep) it’s the perfect time to do this.
